Toshiba partners with Mitsubishi for development of li-ion SCiB EV batteries
Source: Autoblog GreenToshiba has been quite secretive regarding the development of its
li-ion SCiB battery technology for
electric vehicles (EVs). As of late last year, the battery maker remained confident that its
SCiB technology would eventually find its way into
EVs produced by several automakers. And then a couple months back, Toshiba announced that it was continuing to develop the SCiB technology with the help of several undisclosed automakers. Now, Toshiba has formally announced a
partnership with Mitsubishi that will speed the development and use of the
SCiB li-ion technology.
As Toshiba states, it will collaborate with
Mitsubishi Motors to bring
SCiB batteries into the
EV marketplace as quickly as possible. Details of the partnership are limited and Toshiba did not reveal any additional information about the partnership at this time. However, the company did add that development of the SCiB is moving along. As Toshiba states, the SCiB battery offers an exceptionally long
life of up to 20 years, is capable of accepting
6,000-plus charges and is
rapid recharge ready. Toshiba believes that its SCiB battery will revolutionize the industry by
extending EV range while also offering a more
durable, safer alternative to traditional li-ion batteries. It remains to be seen if automakers will make the leap over to Toshiba's SCiB technology, but the company's specs for the battery certainly look promising.
