Electric cars are coming to Quebec roads in the largest pilot project ever in Canada.
Hydro-Québec, the city of Boucherville and Mitsubishi Canada announced a deal that will see 50 of the automaker's i-MiEV electric vehicles tested on our roads for up to four years.
The announcement was made during media day at the 42nd Montreal International Auto Show on Thursday.
The goal of the pilot project, according to Thierry Vandal, the president and CEO of Hydro, is to test the cars in real-world conditions and "allow us to advance the knowledge of the technology and its integration into our grid, which in turn, will help us plan the necessary charging infrastructure for homes, offices and public places."
The project is expected to cost $4.5 million and will also include the participation of local businesses, which will receive many of the vehicles.
Boucherville will get three vehicles this fall to be used by city employees, although the exact use of the vehicles has not been determined, Mayor Jean Martel said.
