Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc., (MMNA) announced it will loan two of its zero-emission, new-generation, i-MiEVs to the State of California for evaluation in their test fleet. The move comes as the Governor's office and the Department of General Services both expressed interest in the inclusion of electric vehicles (EV), such as the i-MiEV, into the State's support vehicle fleet.

The electric-vehicle revolution is upon us--or at least, that's what manufacturers such as Mitsubishi would like us to believe. We've had plenty of exposure to EVs, including several short drives in Mitsubishi's first mass-production zero-emissions car, the i-MiEV. But none of those drives gave us a chance to live with an EV in the real world, to see how it really performs when subjected to the stresses of everyday use.

Japanese car maker Mitsubishi Motors plans to introduce its small all-electric i-MiEV car to the Chinese market by 2012 and may produce electric cars locally to benefit government subsidies, the company's president said recently, the Wall Street Journal reported.

GS Yuasa Corp., a Japanese lithium ion battery maker that has partnered with Mitsubishi and Honda, plans to open a fourth battery plant in 2012 to boost volume and cut costs. The factory will have battery capacity for 50,000 vehicles a year and will be operated by Lithium Energy Japan, GS Yuasa's battery joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors Corp.

Mitsubishi's new five-seat Outlander Sport is the latest in a growing segment of ultra-small crossovers that includes models like the upcoming Nissan Juke and Mini Cooper Countryman. It's offered with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive and will be available in base ES and upper-level SE trim levels when it hits dealerships in fall.
